Update:

Carina now a super typhoon

Typhoon Gaemi, locally known as Carina, has escalated from being a typhoon to being a super typhoon this Wednesday afternoon, July 24, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

According to the weather bureau in its 5 PM report, Carina has reached maximum sustained winds at 185 kilometers per hour (kph) and its eye at 380 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes, with the whole region under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2, before predictably heading to Taiwan on Wednesday evening and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday morning, July 25.

Rizal vs Carina

Although not under any TCWS, Central Luzon and Metro Manila, along with its surrounding regions, experience the super typhoon’s torrent as Carina continues to amplify the southwest monsoon or more commonly known as Habagat, leaving its citizens and countless pet animals stranded in the constantly-rising flood.

Rescue operations for both human and animal residents were conducted at an evacuation center at Kingsville, Antipolo City, Rizal. Several school year openings were also postponed in Rizal until further notice due to class suspensions. A large portion of the Marcos Highway at Masinag, Antipolo and a section of Brgy. Dalig in Teresa, Rizal was also flooded, with motorists struggling to flee the road. Numerous establishments did not open for service as Carina continues to submerge the area in knee-deep flood.

Relief support for victims

Public spaces such as SM Malls, Robinsons Malls, and Ayala Malls, including small private staycation places, offer free accommodation to accompany public schools and covered courts in serving as evacuation sites.

Philippine English-language newspaper The Inquirer, along with its constant updates on Carina, offers its help to victims and extends its relief and fund drive through Inquirer Foundation Corp.:

  • BDO Account number: 007960018860.

Meanwhile, Antipolo’s 24/7 Emergency Operations Center opens its communication lines for its residents, as shown below:

Carina exits PAR, OLPS Extends Help to Victims

As of Thursday morning, June 25, PAGASA reported Super Typhoon Carina’s exit out of the PAR at 6:20 AM, but will continue to enhance Habagat winds, leaving the north part of the country in TCWS No. 1 and Metro Manila with less rainfall in the following days.

“Sa Metro Manila meron pa din pag-ulan. Sa Ilocos Region, medyo malakas po, kasi yung konsentrasyon ng habagat medyo tumaas po, papunta naman ng Ilocos region,” PAGASA weather specialist Samuel Duran said over the phone with The Inquirer.

Local Government Units (LGUs) in affected areas and Non Government Organizations (NGOs) such as Former Vice President Leni Robredo’s Angat Buhay and Patricia Non’s Community Pantry PH are still offering relief aid to Carina’s victims.

Our Lady of Peace School (OLPS) extends its help to those who need assistance during this challenging time by organizing a donation drive, along with the Supreme Senior High School Student Council (SSHSSC) who also shared different links of organizations who are offering assistance.

The school advises the public to drop off their donations at the main lobby (Gate 4) while monetary donations are to be directed through the school’s Metrobank account:
