Philippines’ Road to Gold: Celebrating a Century of Olympic Legacy on the Path to Paris 2024

The Philippines will be represented by 22 athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, receiving the full support of Filipinos worldwide. This participation marks a special milestone as the country celebrates its centennial anniversary of joining the Olympics. These dedicated athletes are gearing up for the games, set to run from July 26 to August 11, aiming to showcase their talent and dedication on the world stage.

Carlos Yulo, one of the most outstanding Filipino athletes, won several gymnastics titles and two gold medals in team and floor exercise at the Southeast Asian Games in Manila. He is also from an athletic family.

 Then, one of the most well-known golfers in the Philippines, Bianca Pagdanganan, used to play for several universities in the United States but globally represented the Philippines in the Paris Olympics.

 Aleah Finnegan, a Filipino-American artistic gymnast, started representing the Philippines internationally in 2022. Her previous medals were gold at the 2019 Pan American Games and bronze at the 2023 Asian Championship.

EJ Obiena, the world’s second-ranked men’s pole vaulter, has both national and Asian records. He is also trained by famed coach Vitaly Petrov and his father, Emerson Obiena.


Emma Malabuyo represented the Philippines at the 2023 Asian Championships, finishing fifth overall and silver in the floor and balance beam events. 

Levi Jung-Ruivivar, a Los Angeles native, qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics by gaining points in the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series.

Aira Villegas defeated Bulgaria’s Zlatislava Chukanova in the women’s 50 kg category at the first World Qualification Tournament in Italy, earning a ticket to Paris 2024.

Nesthy Petecio, the Philippines’ first female Olympic boxing medalist, won silver in Tokyo 2020.

Carlo Paalam, who won silver in Tokyo 2020, advanced to Paris 2024 after defeating Sachin Siwach by unanimous decision in the men’s 57 kg division semifinals in the 2024 Boxing 2nd World Qualification Tournament.

 Eumir Marcial, a boxer from Zamboanga, will compete in the Paris Olympics 2024. After winning bronze in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he will compete in a super-middleweight event.

Hergie Bacyadan, a former wushu and vovinam athlete, gained international recognition after earning first place at the 2023 Vovinam World Championships. His boxing debut occurred at the 2019 ASBC Asian Elite Championships in Bangkok. He has secured his spot at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Sam Catantan ended the Philippines’ 32-year Olympic fencing drought by winning the women’s foil event at the Asia-Oceania Zonal Olympic Qualifier despite suffering a left knee ailment.

 Dottie Ardina, a 30-year-old golfer, will make her Olympic debut in Paris this year, competing in women’s golf.

Kiyomi Watanabe, a Filipino judoka and boxer, will compete at the Olympics in the 63 kg weight category.

 Joanie Delgaco qualified for Paris in the women’s single sculls at the World Rowing Asian and Oceanian Qualification Regatta held in South Korea. She is the first Filipina rower to represent the Philippines at the Olympics.

 Jarod Hatch, a US-born American swimmer, has represented the Philippine national team since 2018, winning silver medals in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2019 SEA Games and setting a Philippine record in the 100m butterfly event.

 Kayla Sanchez, a two-time Olympian, represented the Philippines at the 2022 Asian Games, hoping to inspire other Filipinos to join the sport after previously competing under the Canadian flag.

 Elreen Ando, a national record holder in Philippine women’s weightlifting, qualified for Paris 2024 by finishing seventh at the IWF (International Weightlifting Federation) World Cup.

 Vanessa Sarno, the Philippine women’s weightlifting national record holder, qualified for Paris 2024 after an impressive performance at the IWF World Cup in Thailand.

 Cebuano weightlifter John Ceniza qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics after placing fourth at the IWC World Cup in Thailand.

 Lauren Hoffman holds the Philippine national record for the women’s 400m hurdles, clocking 55.72 seconds at the 114th Drake Relays in April 2024.

 John Cabang Tolentino, a Filipino-Spanish athlete, holds the Philippine national record for the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.37 seconds and has previously finished in the top eight at the Asian Games and Championships.

As the Philippines prepares for the Paris 2024 Olympics, the nation is filled with anticipation and pride. Filipino athletes, known for their determination and skill, are ready to make their mark on the global stage, representing the country with honor.

The journey to Paris embodies more than just the quest for medals; it reflects a collective spirit and national pride. With unwavering support from home, the Philippines eagerly awaits the opportunity to celebrate the achievements and resilience of its Olympic hopefuls.
